[1] If the
lips already have paint on them, start by removing that with your
magic eraser or acetone. Make sure that all the paint and coating is
gone around the lips. Wash the head thoroughly with a bit of
detergent and let air dry before you begin work. After drying, apply
two coats of MSC or Testor's Dullcote to the area. If you're using a
blank head, just make sure the head is clean and then apply your
coating.
[2]
Once your coating is dry
(I usually wait about half an hour, so I don't disturb the coating
or leave prints on the head), using either your round or flat
brushes apply pastel evenly to the area of the lips that you'd like
color. I'm using a blend of soft brown, red, and orange for Evon's
lips. If you get pastel outside the lips, brush it off gently with
your eraser or a clean brush.
[3]
At this point, it really
depends on what your personal preference is. If you want darker lips
coat them with MSC/Testor's again to set the pastel and then apply
another layer of pastel once your coating has dried. Just repeat
this process until you have the shade and darkness you'd like.

After you've got the color
you want, you can either gloss the lips and apply detail, or you can
leave them matte for a softer look. For this tutorial I'm adding gloss
and detail lines. I'm using Ceramcoat gloss varnish (it's super shiny
and nontoxic), but there are a variety of glosses you can choose from.
If you want, apply gloss evenly to the lips over the color.
|
[5] While
you're waiting on the gloss to dry, mix up a color (eeeeeeek @ my
oogly palettes XD) either slightly darker, or slightly lighter than
the color of the pastel on the lips. I keep my pastel fairly light
underneath, so I usually mix a darker color in the family of the
color I used on the lips. You can apply both a darker and a lighter
acrylic color over the lips if you'd like alternating lip lines. For
this tutorial, I am only using a darker color. You need to thin the
color before applying it though, if you use straight paint things
tend to come out chunky and uneven. You can use acrylic thinner or
water. You'll want to try to make the paint about the consistency of
tomato soup.
[6]
Take your small
(20/0-10/0 size) brush and carefully apply the lip lines uniformly
across the bottom of the lips. You can apply them to the top lip as
well, but that's entirely up to you. On Evon here, it doesn't make a
difference because on this sculpt, you can rarely see the top lip
fully unless you're looking up his nose XD.

[7] After
applying the lip lines, you can either gloss them again to seal or
apply darker lines in the corners of the mouth for more detail, or
to create a smile/frown effect. Evon's normally an upbeat guy, so
I'm gonna give him a smile^^. You can either use an even darker
color than the one you used for the lip lines, or, like I'm doing
here, you can use a shade of brown. In all honesty, you can use
whatever color you like, it's completely up to the look -you- want
to achieve.

[8] After I
apply the brown to the corners of the mouth, I seal everything with
another even coat of gloss. Let this coat dry and that's it!
